Located between the Gütsch and the Reuss is the Basel-Bernstrasse quarter of Lucerne, called BaBeL for short. It's culturally diverse, and home to people from some 70 nations. The BaBeL "Basel-/Bernstrasse Lucerne sustainable neighbourhood development" project was launched to upgrade the quarter in a sustainable way.

The fascinating BaBeL tours present the history and challenges of the quarter and some of the current projects.

Eventful history since the Middle Ages

Medieval Lucerne stopped where Kasernenplatz is today. Everything the town didn't want was put outside its walls, including the infirmary, a hospital for leprosy patients, the slaughterhouse and the prison. Since dwellings here were cheap, itinerant workers, migrants and refugees moved into the quarter.

And what does the quarter look like today? This informative tour has the answers. By prior arrangement, the tour can be followed by an aperitif or meal in the quarter.
